Complete power loss in the property: london EICR electrician

No electricity anywhere in the house. The whole flat's dead, and you don't yet know whether the problem is inside your property or with the incoming supply. That's unsettling, especially if somebody depends on powered medical equipment or a stairlift.

Neighbours still have power? That helps narrow the checks, but it doesn't tell you which part has failed. The first job is to establish where the supply stops.

What it might mean

An RCD may have tripped because of a fault within the installation. The main switch could be off, or there could be a network outage or a blown DNO cutout fuse. Less commonly, a failed main switch, meter or tails connection could be involved. None of those possibilities is a diagnosis from symptoms alone.

During EICR testing, we've seen mixed-age wiring, rewireable fuses and boards without RCD protection in converted houses. Areas such as East London and North London contain this kind of housing. An older board needs checking; its age doesn't explain today's power loss by itself.

How urgent is it?

Once a network outage has been ruled out, a property whose main protective device won't stay on needs urgent fault finding. Don't leave a repeatedly tripping device until a routine inspection date. The fault may still be present, and another reset can re-energise it.

Loss of refrigeration, heat, stairlift use or electrically powered medical equipment makes delay harder on vulnerable occupants. If the wider supply is down, follow the network operator's advice while the outage is dealt with. A repeat trip inside your installation needs an urgent electrician's visit.

We're open 8am to 10pm, seven days a week. Qualified, insured electricians carry out the fault checks.

What you can safely check

Look at neighbouring properties and the street. If they're also off, report the network outage to the distribution network operator rather than booking an electrician. Check a prepayment meter has credit, then look at the positions of the main switch and RCD on your consumer unit.

Keep this to the normal controls. Don't remove covers or try to change the cutout fuse. If the main device has already tripped again after a reset, leave it off. Repeatedly forcing it back on isn't fault finding.

What we check

We start by checking whether supply is present at the intake, including the cutout, meter and tails. That separates a supply-side issue from trouble within your installation before repair decisions are made.

Where incoming power is healthy, we isolate final circuits and test to find which is preventing the main protective device from staying on. We then repair or isolate the affected circuit so other circuits can be re-energised safely. Anything that must remain disconnected needs an explanation and a quote for permanent repair.

Looking for EICR London help? An electrical installation condition report isn't a repair. Finding the reason for this shutdown comes first.

How it's fixed

An urgent visit starts with making the installation safe, then tracing the cause. Depending on the findings, the work may involve repairing the circuit fault, replacing failed main switchgear or replacing an obsolete board. A blackout alone isn't a reason to order a new consumer unit.

That's the purpose of our fi investigations & fault finding: establish the fault before deciding what needs repairing. If a circuit must stay isolated, you'll receive a free, no-obligation quote for its permanent repair.

Call now if the main device trips again

Once the network's been ruled out, a main device that won't hold on is a reason to request urgent electrical help. Leave it off after a repeat trip. Another reset doesn't resolve the underlying fault.

Whole property dark and the RCD won't stay on?

If your North London home is without electricity and you've ruled out a network outage, call for a qualified, insured electrician to investigate. Tell us whether the RCD has tripped again and what you've checked, so the conversation starts with what's happening now. Once the immediate problem's dealt with, book an EICR in London and receive your inspection report by email.

Get your property's power loss checked now

Call us about your West London property when everything's off after another trip and there's no wider power cut. Mention anyone who depends on medical equipment or needs a stairlift, because losing that supply makes even a short delay harder for vulnerable occupants. After the urgent work, arrange EICR testing and have the resulting condition report emailed as a PDF.
