Lights flickering, dimming or bulbs blowing repeatedly in London
Lights flickering, dimming or bulbs blowing repeatedly? Here's what it usually means — and how we help across London.
Lights flickering, dimming or bulbs blowing repeatedly? Ask a London EICR electrician
Same-day appointments are often possible, depending on availability. Describe the pattern when arranging a visit: lights that dim as an appliance starts, a flicker confined to a room, or bulbs that keep blowing. We need to establish whether the problem sits at a fitting, along a circuit or across the property.
You don't want another evening wondering whether replacing the bulb has sorted it. LED lights flickering after a lamp change and lights dipping throughout the house need different checks.
What it might mean
A loose connection at a switch, ceiling rose or elsewhere on the circuit could explain intermittent flickering. It's particularly worth investigating when a room's lights react to floor vibrations. If a loose joint is responsible, it can generate heat and arcing.
If LED trouble started after changing lamps, an incompatible lamp or dimmer may be behind it rather than damaged wiring. Older lighting circuits could also have degraded terminations or lack an earth.
In converted houses in North London and South East London, wiring may have been altered as properties were divided. Alterations over decades can leave mixed-age wiring, so the affected circuit needs checking. Flickering throughout the property could point to a failing neutral or supply connection, especially if neighbours notice it too. A deteriorating supply neutral can damage appliances and needs the electricity network operator.
How urgent is it?
Book promptly. Flickering limited to a fitting is rarely an emergency if there's no accompanying heat, buzzing or smell, but repeated lamp failures still waste money and may point to an underlying problem.
If lights flicker across the property, or there's heat, buzzing or a smell alongside the flicker, phone now to arrange urgent attention today. Don't wait for the next routine inspection.
What you can safely check
Note whether it affects a single fitting, a lighting circuit or the entire property. Record whether it happens when an appliance starts, after changing a lamp, or when the floor vibrates. Ask whether neighbours have noticed the same thing.
If the whole street or block is affected, report it to your electricity network operator. Don't keep putting replacement bulbs into a fitting that scorches or crackles; stop using it.
Leave switch plates, ceiling roses and wiring connections alone. Opening them or trying to tighten a connection isn't a safe check to make yourself.
What we check
We start by mapping the symptoms: fitting, circuit or whole installation. Then, with the affected circuit safely isolated, we inspect and re-torque terminations on that run. Testing checks for high-resistance joints, and we check whether the lamps suit the dimmer.
We've spent years inspecting mixed-age wiring across London. Guessing from the age of a property won't establish why its lights flicker.
Our EICR London service assesses the fixed installation against BS 7671 and provides an electrical installation condition report. Persistent flickering may also need targeted fault investigation. If the symptoms suggest a supply problem, we escalate the evidence to the distribution network operator, or DNO.
How it's fixed
If testing locates a failing connection, we can remake it. Where an ageing lighting circuit can no longer hold sound terminations, rewiring that circuit may be needed.
Our fi investigations & fault finding service traces the cause so repair work follows the evidence. For urgent symptoms, the visit may start with isolating the affected installation to make it safe, followed by tracing the fault. Supply-side concerns need the network operator's involvement.
Whole-property flickering or signs of heat? Phone now
A smell or buzzing alongside the flicker also needs urgent attention. A fitting that scorches or crackles must stay unused while help is arranged. If a joint is failing, fitting another bulb won't repair it.

Get Your Flickering Lights Assessed
Arrange EICR testing today for your West London flat or house, and ask whether we can offer a same-day booking. Tell us about repeated bulb failures or persistent dimming, including which rooms are affected, so we can understand the pattern before attending. Your EICR is carried out by a NICEIC-registered engineer, and we'll email the finished report for your records.
