Tingling or a shock from a tap, appliance or switch in London
Tingling or a shock from a tap, appliance or switch? Here's what it usually means — and how we help across London.
London EICR electrician: tingling or a shock from a tap, appliance or switch
You've touched a tap, brushed the sink or reached for a switch and felt a sting. Or the washing machine gives you a tingle when you touch its casing. It's unsettling, especially when you're trying to decide what you can safely use.
Don't touch it again to check. A faint sensation still needs urgent attention, even if you'd describe it as "static from everything metal".
What it might mean
A fault could be making exposed metalwork live, with missing or inadequate earthing or bonding allowing danger to persist. That's a possibility with tingling taps or pipework, particularly in older properties. If the sensation seems confined to an appliance, it might instead be a fault leaking current to its casing.
There's also a possible supply problem: a deteriorating neutral could raise earth potential. That would be a network fault. We can't distinguish these causes from your description alone.
In older converted homes, we regularly find mixed-age wiring and consumer units without RCD protection. But age isn't a diagnosis: a shock needs urgent investigation in an East London conversion or a modern North London flat alike.
How urgent is it?
Treat this as an emergency. A perceptible electrical tingle means protection has already failed somewhere; the next fault could be fatal. Isolate the affected supply if it's safe to do so and call immediately. This isn't a symptom to leave until a routine inspection.
Children, older people and anyone who's wet or barefoot face far greater risk from the same fault. A mild sensation doesn't make continued use safe.
What you can safely check
Stop using the appliance or fitting straight away. Unplug the appliance only if that's safe and your hands are dry. Otherwise, leave it alone rather than reaching around it or touching the casing again.
If taps, a sink or pipes tingle, switch off at the main switch if you can safely reach it, then call for urgent electrical help. Don't remove covers, investigate connections or try to find the fault yourself.
Anyone who's received a significant shock needs medical attention, especially if there are burns or the shock passed across their chest. Don't postpone that while sorting out the electrics.
What we check
A qualified, insured electrician starts by isolating the affected equipment or circuit and proving it dead. We then test earthing, main protective bonding and earth fault loop impedance across the installation.
The suspect appliance is tested separately from the fixed wiring. Our EICR London work produces an electrical installation condition report, but a live shock hazard needs isolation and fault tracing before routine reporting.
How it's fixed
The urgent job is to isolate and make the affected installation safe, then trace the source through fi investigations & fault finding. We establish whether attention is needed on the appliance or fixed installation, while allowing for a possible network fault.
We correct identified earthing or main protective bonding defects to the relevant BS 7671 requirements. An appliance found unsafe is condemned and must stay out of use. Then we re-test. The right repair depends on what those tests show.
Felt a tingle? Don't wait for another shock
Call now if a tap, appliance, switch or other metalwork has given you a shock. Explain what you touched and whether the supply is switched off, without handling anything again. Protection has already failed somewhere; waiting leaves the danger unresolved.
Felt a shock? Arrange urgent electrical help
A tingle from your washing machine or tap needs urgent professional attention, even in a modern flat in West London. Call us now to describe what's happened and arrange help from a competent, insured engineer who can isolate the affected equipment and investigate. After the immediate danger is dealt with, book an EICR in London and receive your report by email.
Get the shock hazard made safe
You don't need to work out why the sink tingled before asking for help, and you shouldn't wait until somebody else touches it. For your Central London flat or terraced house, start with a call to arrange safe isolation and professional diagnosis. Then schedule EICR testing after the immediate fault has been addressed, with the completed report emailed as a PDF.
