London EICR electrician: burning smell, scorching or smoke from a socket, switch or fuse box

You've noticed a fishy smell near a socket, brown scorch marks or a melting smell at a switch. Perhaps the plug got really hot, or you can smell burning but can't find where it's coming from. Treat it as a live fire risk.

If there's smoke or flame, get out and call 999 before calling an electrician. Don't stop to investigate.

What it might mean

A loose termination could be arcing and overheating under load. Heat marks, an acrid smell or a warm faceplate can fit that pattern, but they don't establish the cause. An overloaded socket, adaptor or extension lead is another possibility.

The trouble could also be a failing appliance or its plug, or ageing wiring and accessories breaking down internally. Our EICR London work regularly turns up mixed-age wiring and older fuse boards in converted houses. In West London or South East London, tell the electrician whether you're in a conversion or a purpose-built block, as well as describing the smell.

How urgent is it?

This needs immediate attention. If it's safe to reach the consumer unit and there's no smoke or flame, switch off the affected circuit immediately. Use the main switch if you can't identify that circuit.

An electrical installation condition report isn't the first step while something may be overheating. Seek urgent electrical help now. Arcing at a loose connection could start a fire, and hidden damage behind an accessory can keep degrading if the fault remains unresolved.

What you can safely check

Keep your checks limited to safe isolation and unplugging whatever was connected once it's safe to do so. Don't touch a hot or scorched faceplate. And don't remove a cover or try tightening a connection yourself.

If the fuse box itself is smoking, leave rather than reaching for its switches. A smell that fades after switching off isn't proof that the circuit is safe to reuse.

What we check

We isolate the supply before opening the affected accessory, then inspect its terminations and conductors. We check the cable insulation behind it for heat damage and trace how far that damage extends.

Related connections on the circuit need attention too. We use thermal scanning and testing to look for the same fault developing elsewhere. You can't judge hidden cable damage from the front of a socket.

How it's fixed

The urgent visit starts with isolation and making the installation safe, followed by tracing the fault. That work falls under fi investigations & fault finding, with the extent of any cable damage checked before the repair is completed.

We replace damaged accessories and cabling where needed, then test and certificate that repair. Fitting a fresh faceplate alone won't address heat-damaged cable behind it. Once we've addressed the immediate fault, EICR testing can assess the wider fixed installation.

Call now if the burning smell is unexplained

Seek urgent help for an electrical burning smell, even if you haven't located it. Smoke or flames mean evacuation and 999 first; waiting for routine testing leaves the immediate danger unresolved.

Need that burning smell investigated now?

Don't reuse a scorched socket because it's cooled down; phone us for urgent help at your East London home and leave that circuit isolated. If anything starts smoking or catches fire, get outside and call 999 first. After the installation's made safe, arrange EICR testing with a NICEIC-registered engineer to assess its wider condition, and have the resulting PDF report emailed.
